Belgium captain Kompany out of Euro16

May 7, 2016 - 11:59 PM Belgium captain Vincent Kompany has been ruled out of the European Championships.

The 30-year-old defender was forced off with a thigh injury in Manchester City's loss at Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday (Thursday AEST).

It was the latest frustrating muscle injury for Kompany, who missed large parts of City's stuttering season with calf problems.

In a Facebook post from his hospital bed, Kompany wrote on Saturday (Sunday AEST): "I'll miss the Euros. To me that's very sad news."

Kompany added: "I could be standing here, feeling sorry for myself. I could fear for my career, as others may do. I could give up. That is not me. I decide on my future."

Belgium face Italy, Ireland and Sweden in Group E of Euro16 in France which starts next month.
