Papadopoulos to be punished for spitting
Nov 27, 2017 - 6:45 AM Brisbane Roar defender Avram Papadopoulos has been slapped with a disciplinary notice for spitting at Sydney FC's Matt Simon. The A-League's match review panel (MRP) has sent the incident, from Saturday night's clash at Allianz Stadium, straight to an independent disciplinary committee to determine his fate.
A date for the hearing has not been finalised but Papadopoulos faces a lengthy ban of at least six weeks and will also be doled out an internal club punishment.
However, a Roar spokesman did not say what that punishment would be, despite coach John Aloisi saying it would be determined on Monday, with the club refusing to make any comment until after the hearing.
Papadopoulos, a former Greek international who was born in Melbourne, apologised immediately after the 3-1 defeat through a club statement and is reportedly distraught by his actions.
The 32-year-old was red-carded after a long stoppage as the video assistant referee reviewed the incident.
The footage did not look good for Papadopoulos, who stared intently at Simon for a lengthy period before spitting in his direction.
However, Simon was also sent off for retaliating by pushing Papadopoulos to the ground, and the A-League's MRP has chosen not to waive his automatic one-match ban after determining he was guilty of "serious unsporting conduct."
It's likely Sydney FC will appeal that ruling, as foreshadowed by coach Graham Arnold.
The timing couldn't be worse for second-bottom Brisbane, who already have a number of defenders like Luke DeVere and Jade North currently sidelined due to injury.
