Cabrera helps Venezuela outlast Spain

Mar 10, 2013 - 9:16 PM San Juan, PR (Sports Network) - Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, three RBI and three runs scored to lead Venezuela to an 11-6 win over Spain in a Pool C matchup at Hiram Bithorn Stadium on Sunday.

Elvis Andrus drove in a pair of runs and Pablo Sandoval added a solo shot for Venezuela, which got three hits and an RBI from Omar Infante.

R.A. Ramirez (1-0) allowed three runs on four hits and struck out four over four frames to earn the win.

Barbaro Canizares clubbed a two-run homer and Engel Beltre added a solo shot for Spain.

Eddie Morlan (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits without recording an out in the fourth inning to absorb the loss.

Spain plated three runs in the first, including Canizares' homer, to take an early lead, but Venezuela scored six runs in the fourth and never looked back.

Alex Romero got things started with an RBI single and Infante followed with a double to center to score Martin Prado. Andrus plated Romero and Infante with a single later in the inning before coming around on a Cabrera single. Carlos Gonzalez capped the big inning with a base hit to center to score Cabrera.

Spain made it 6-5 in the top of the fifth following Salomon Manriquez's two- run single to left, but in the bottom of the sixth, Cabrera had an RBI single and Miguel Montero drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 8-5.

Cabrera and Sandoval crushed back-to-back homers and Prado doubled home Gonzalez in the eighth to put the home team ahead 11-5.

Beltre added a solo homer in the top of the ninth to account for the final margin.
