Griner leads Mercury past Storm
Aug 18, 2014 - 3:32 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brittney Griner posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards, as the Phoenix Mercury set the WNBA wins record with a 78-65 takedown of the Seattle Storm in the season finale for both teams.Phoenix (29-5), which had already locked up home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, shot 53.6 percent from the field in its final game before the playoffs.
The Mercury broke the 28-win mark, previously set twice by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2000 and 2001, as well as the Storm in 2010.
Candice Dupree added 16 points and seven boards while Penny Taylor and Erin Phillips each donated 11 points.
Crystal Langhorne had 16 points for Seattle (12-22), which will miss the postseason for the first time since 2003.
Phoenix never trailed, jumping out to a 40-29 halftime lead and never looking back.
The Mercury are set to host the Sparks in the Western Conference semifinals.
