Spencer, Sparks snap seven-game skid against Mercury

Jul 21, 2007 - 4:29 AM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Sidney Spencer recorded career highs of 24 points and 12 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Sparks snap a seven-game losing streak with an 87-77 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Friday.

Mwadi Mabika added a season-high 21 points with seven rebounds and seven assists for the Sparks, who shot just 38 percent (28-of-73) from the field but forced 20 turnovers.

Sherill Baker scored 11 points and Jessica Moore finished with 10 for Los Angeles, which had not won on the road since June 15.

The Sparks jumped to an early 32-16 lead with 1:48 left in the first quarter after hitting six 3-pointers.

Phoenix tied the game late in the third quarter, but Los Angeles responded with a 12-0 run that was capped by consecutive 3-pointers by Mabika and Spencer to take a 65-53 advantage it would not relinquish.

Cappie Pondexter scored 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting and Penny Taylor added 12 for the Mercury, who have lost three of their last four games after a season-high four-game winning streak.
