Lions hold off Ticats

Aug 9, 2014 - 5:55 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Glenn accounted for 443 total yards and a pair of touchdowns, as the British Columbia Lions outlasted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 36-29, at BC Place.

Glenn threw for 407 yards on 22-of-36 passing and added 36 yards on the ground for the Lions (4-3), who have won four of five since an 0-2 start. Both Shawn Gore (five receptions, 117 yards) and Emmanuel Arceneaux (four receptions, 103 yards, TD) benefitted from Glenn's big night.

Kicker Paul McCallum played a crucial factor in the win as well by going 5- of-5 on field goal attempts.

For Hamilton (1-5), Dan LeFevour completed 23-of-34 passes for 298 yards while rushing for an additional 103 yards and a score. Samuel Giguere caught just three passes but finished with 130 yards.

BC got out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter. McCallum knocked through a 26-yard field goal on the game's first drive, and less than five minutes later Glenn hooked up with Arceneaux on a 10-yard scoring strike.

Hamilton had a drive stall on the 5-yard line later in the quarter and had to settle for a 14-yard field goal by Justin Medlock.

Glenn scrambled for a 19-yard touchdown run as time expired on a busy opening frame, extending the Lions' lead to 17-3.

The Ticats came storming back in the second quarter, starting when Medlock made a 31-yard field goal less than three minutes in. Midway through the frame, Brandon Banks took a punt return 97 yards for a major, and with 2:30 left before halftime Medlock made another field goal (32 yards) to make Hamilton's deficit just one, 17-16.

After Glenn threw an interception late in the half, Hamilton took advantage with a 38-yard field goal by Medlock, as it carried a 19-17 lead into intermission.

BC finally put an end to the Ticats' run at the 10:06 mark of the third quarter, as it went ahead, 20-19, following a 47-yard field goal by McCallum.

After a pass interference call set them up deep in Hamilton territory, the Lions extended their lead with five minutes to play in the third quarter when Andrew Harris plunged in for a four-yard touchdown run. Harris left the game following that score with a lower body injury and did not return.

The Ticats again made it a one-point contest on their next possession when LeFevour snuck into the end zone from one yard out.

The Lions went up by four, 30-26, with 8:37 to play on another field goal by McCallum (32 yards).

Medlock's perfect night continued at the 6:36 mark when he drilled a 40-yarder to once again bring Hamilton within one.

BC responded by driving deep into Hamilton territory but had to settle for a 20-yard field goal by McCallum with 2:32 left.

The Ticats punted the ball back to the Lions with under two minutes left, and BC managed to run out most of the clock from there. McCallum sealed the victory by connecting on a 42-yard field goal with just four seconds remaining.

Hamilton will host BC on Oct. 4 ... The Lions have defeated the Ticats in four of the last five meetings to take a 50-33-3 lead in the all-time series ... Outside of LeFevour, Hamilton finished with just three carries for negative- three yards ... Ronnie Yell collected a game-high eight tackles for BC, while Alex Bazzie sacked LeFevour twice.
