Hill, Pollock push D-backs past Phillies
Apr 26, 2014 - 6:54 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Hill went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and finished with three RBI, while A.J. Pollock added two hits, including a solo homer, to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game set.Paul Goldschmidt also drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, winners in three straight.
Josh Collmenter (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after scattering four hits over six scoreless innings. He fanned five without issuing a walk.
"As a starting rotation, you take pride in being able to go out there and give the team a chance to win and then hand the ball to the next guy," Collmenter said. "We've gotten some quality efforts the last few times out so we're hoping that that can continue."
Addison Reed notched his sixth save of the season despite allowing a run in the ninth inning.
Jimmy Rollins went 2-for-5 with an RBI while Cody Asche and Tony Gwynn Jr. finished with one RBI apiece for the Phillies, losers in two of three.
"I think he was tough to pick up the first couple at-bats for the players," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Collmenter. "He was moving it around. He had movement on his fastball."
Roberto Hernandez (1-1) allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings to absorb the loss.
Arizona scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead. Miguel Montero worked a leadoff walk ahead of Hill's homer to left- center field in the fourth.
In the fifth, Gerardo Parra singled, stole second and then moved to third on Martin Prado's ground out. Goldschmidt followed with a base hit to right to score Parra. After Montero walked, Hill smacked a ground-rule double to left- center to make it 4-0.
The Phillies pushed three runs across in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Asche worked a walk off Randall Delgado to force Marlon Byrd home. Gwynn then singled up the middle to score Domonic Brown and Carlos Ruiz.
Pollock's homer in the eighth added an insurance run that would prove to be the difference.
In the ninth, Reed allowed a two-out single to Ben Revere, who advanced to second on a defensive indifference. Rollins then smacked a single to right to bring Revere around. Reed intentionally walked Chase Utley to put two runners on before getting John Mayberry to strike out looking to end the game.
