Arroyo dazzles as D-backs shut out Padres
May 3, 2014 - 5:11 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Bronson Arroyo hurled seven innings of shutout ball and the Arizona Diamondbacks blanked the San Diego Padres, 2-0, on Friday in the opener of a three-game set.Arroyo (2-2) was stellar to earn the win, striking out six over seven innings and allowing just three hits. The right-hander went 4 1/3 innings before allowing his first hit.
Arroyo entered the game with a 3-0 record and a 2.18 ERA over his previous five starts versus San Diego.
"It's the best stuff he's had all year tonight," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Arroyo. "You get in this park, it's hard to score anyway. Two runs was enough tonight."
Brad Ziegler pitched a perfect eighth and Addison Reed closed the door in the ninth to pick up his seventh save.
Aaron Hill had two hits and two RBI for the Diamondbacks, who have won two straight.
Andrew Cashner (2-4) was charged with the loss after surrendering two runs on four hits over six innings on the bump for San Diego, which has lost three straight.
"It was a well pitched game by both sides," said Padres manager Bud Black. "(Cashner) just had that one bad inning. Arroyo settled in from the start. It was a pretty simple game, well pitched."
San Diego was 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, left four on base and saw just two runners reach third in the setback.
Paul Goldschmidt singled to put runners at the corners with two outs in the third, then Miguel Montero walked to load the bases.
Hill slapped a single into left-center that plated Parra and Goldschmidt to give the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead.
The win marked Gibson's 300th of his managerial career (all with the D-backs). When asked how he felt about the feat, he responded jokingly, "I would have liked to have 330 by now."
