Trumbo slams D-backs past Giants
Sep 16, 2014 - 5:50 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam and knocked in five runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game set on Monday.Trumbo backed a strong outing from Wade Miley (8-11), who allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four in the win.
A.J. Pollock had an RBI for the D-backs, who have won three straight on the heels of a seven-game skid.
Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey each drove in a run for the Giants, who now trail the Dodgers by four games in the NL West.
San Francisco has dropped three straight games overall.
Ryan Vogelsong (8-11) was tagged for four runs on six hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings in the loss.
"I should have made a better pitch to Trumbo," Vogelsong said. "(It was a cutter) that didn't do anything. It just sat there."
Chris Owings and Miley both singled and Pollock walked with two outs in the third to load the bases for Trumbo, who sent a long drive to right-center for his second career grand slam that gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.
"I struck out earlier without even offering at a pitch. I wanted something away and finally got it," Trumbo said.
Crawford singled home Joaquin Arias in the seventh to get San Francisco on the board, but Arizona answered in the home half with an RBI triple from Pollock and an RBI single from Trumbo to extend the cushion to 6-1.
Posey plated Joe Panik in the eighth to account for the final margin.
