Giants try to bounce back versus D-backs

Sep 15, 2014 - 2:37 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants attempt to put a disappointing weekend behind them when they start a nine-game road trip Monday with the first of three straight games against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The Giants had a chance to trim the deficit in the NL West standings, but lost two of three meetings with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Sunday's rubber match, the Dodgers unleashed ace Clayton Kershaw on the Giants and the left-hander dazzled through eight innings of a 4-2 win, limiting the hosts to seven hits and two runs with nine strikeouts and one walk.

"We don't like losing," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We made a couple of mistakes and when you are playing against a guy like Kershaw it can come back to haunt you."

Yusmeiro Petit lasted seven innings in the start for San Francisco and yielded four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits.

Buster Posey and Matt Duffy both drove in a run for the Giants, who had won four straight and six of seven games. The Giants are three games behind the Dodgers for the division lead, but still lead the wild card.

San Francisco has San Diego and Los Angeles to visit on this trip, and hopes Ryan Vogelsong can begin the journey on a hot note when he takes the mound Monday. Vogelsong is 8-10 with a 3.90 earned run average and did not factor in the outcome of a 5-0 win over the D-backs on Wednesday, charged with only two hits across 6 2/3 shutout innings. He did walk five batters.

Vogelsong, who is 5-4 in 14 road starts, has faced Arizona 20 times (14 starts) in his career and is 3-5 with a 4.34 ERA.

Arizona has won back-to-back games after losing seven in a row and took two of three meetings with the Padres this weekend.

The Diamondbacks won Sunday's rubber match by an 8-6 score, as Chris Owings and Didi Gregorius finished with two hits and an RBI apiece. Zeke Spruill picked up the win with three scoreless innings of relief of starter Trevor Cahill, who was touched for four runs in four innings.

The D-backs scored 23 runs in the series.

"It's nice to score runs," D-backs catcher Miguel Montero said. "It's always nice to come up and hit and find somebody on base. I guess it kind of gets you a little more motivated to go out and get a base hit."

Arizona is two games ahead of Colorado for last in the NL West and will send Wade Miley to the bump Monday. Miley is 7-11 with a 4.28 earned run average and winless (0-4) in the past seven trips to the mound, including Tuesday's 5-1 loss at San Francisco.

Miley gave up three runs and five hits in two innings, and walked four of the 15 batters he faced. The left-hander is only 2-7 in 14 home starts and 3-4 in nine games (8 starts) lifetime against the Giants.

The Giants have dominated Arizona this season, winning 11 of the 16 contest so far and going 5-2 in the desert.
