Cardinals down D-backs in 10
Sep 27, 2014 - 6:28 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Jhonny Peralta had three hits and three RBI, including the game-winning single in the top of the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-6, on Friday.Matt Adams doubled off Brett Jackson's glove in right field to open the 10th and was replaced at second by Daniel Descalso. Peralta, who hit the ball hard all game, crushed a liner to center that easily scored Descalso without a throw.
Marco Gonzales (4-2) pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the win, and Trevor Rosenthal picked up his 45th save for a 1-2-3 10th.
Adams reached base three times and scored twice for the Cardinals, who remained a game ahead of Pittsburgh in the National League Central standings with two games to play. Both teams have clinched a playoff berth.
Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay each drove in a run and scored for St. Louis, which ended a brief two-game losing skid. Starter Michael Wacha overcame a rocky start to pitch five innings of two-run ball.
"In these situations, you see what teams are made of," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "Just a great team effort."
Ender Inciarte extended his hit streak to 14 games with a 4-for-6 effort, while Didi Gregorius had three hits and two RBI for the D-backs, who rallied back from a 6-2 deficit before falling short in extras.
Trevor Cahill gave up four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings for Arizona. Evan Marshall (4-4) absorbed the loss for serving up Peralta's RBI single in the 10th.
"There have been some inconsistencies. He battled, but your talking about a team that's going to the playoffs, said D-backs interim manager Alan Trammell.
Wacha put himself in an immediate hole, issuing walks to A.J. Pollock and David Peralta after Inciarte led off the game with a single to center. Mark Trumbo put the D-backs on the board with a sacrifice fly and Miguel Montero doubled the spread with an RBI single.
St. Louis got a run back in the visiting second, when Adams scored on Yadier Molina's double-play groundout.
Three singles in the top of the sixth loaded the bases for Peralta, who crushed a line drive off the wall in straightaway center field. Two runs scored, and Cahill's night was done.
Molina made it 4-2 with a sac fly against reliever Will Harris.
The Cardinals manufactured two more runs in the top of the seventh against Oliver Perez. Kolten Wong started the rally with an infield single, Peter Bourjos walked and both runners moved up on Montero's errant throw to second base.
Carpenter plated Wong with a groundout, and Jay looped an RBI single to left.
The D-backs would not go away. With Gregorius on first and one out in the seventh, Inciarte grounded softly down the third-base line. Carpenter hoped the ball would roll foul, but it trickled over the bag and into left to place runners on the corners. Pollock's groundout made it 6-3.
Arizona got to Pat Neshek in the home eighth, with Gregorius' two-run bloop single cutting the margin to 6-5. Jordan Pacheco pinch-hit and popped up to deep shortstop for the second out, but Inciarte sliced a ground-rule double over the wall in left to tie the score.
Game Notes
Peralta is 13-for-25 with seven extra-base hits in his last seven games against Arizona ... Cahill is 0-5 in his last six starts and 1-6 in his last 10 at home ... Earlier in the day, Arizona fired manager Kirk Gibson and bench coach Alan Trammell. Trammell is set to manage this final series.
