Vogelsong, Giants edge Braves
May 4, 2014 - 2:47 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Vogelsong pitched six strong frames as the San Francisco Giants took a 3-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in the second of a three-game set.Vogelsong (1-1) gave up just one run on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts for his first win over six starts this season.
"I was kind of fighting myself there a little bit," said Vogelsong. "I was maybe a little tentative at first, getting a little too fine on the corners."
Buster Posey, Michael Morse and Brandon Belt all hit solo home runs for the Giants, who have won four straight and eight of nine.
Julio Teheran (2-2) gave up all three home runs and struck out seven over seven innings for the Braves, who have dropped their past five games. B.J. Upton drove in the lone Atlanta run.
The Giants got on the board in the second inning when Belt led off the frame with his eighth home run of the year, a shot over the right field wall.
Atlanta loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but Teheran grounded out back to the mound to end the frame.
The Braves, though, did tie the game in the third as Jason Heyward drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came home on Upton's double to left. Freddie Freeman followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but he was caught stealing second between strikeouts by Justin Upton and Evan Gattis.
Posey, though, gave the lead right back to San Francisco with his homer to start the fourth, a blast over the wall in left for his seventh of the year.
Atlanta put men on first and second with one out in the fifth, but Freeman lined out and Justin Upton struck out to end the threat.
The Giants got their third leadoff home run of the game in the seventh, when Morse started the frame with his eighth of the year for a 3-1 lead.
Jeremy Affeldt pitched a perfect seventh for the Giants, but gave up a leadoff walk to Freeman in the eighth.
Jean Machi came on and quickly induced a double play from Justin Upton before getting Gattis to ground out.
"We haven't had very much timely hitting lately," said Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla. "Everybody goes through stretches like this. We just have to end it."
Sergio Romo threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save of the season.
