Correia wins in return to NL
Aug 12, 2014 - 3:22 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Correia enjoyed a successful return to the National League with six innings of one-run ball as the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Atlanta Braves, 6-2, in the opener of a four-game series.Correia (1-0) pitched the first 10 years of his career in the Senior Circuit before spending the last two in Minnesota. He only won five times in 23 starts with the Twins this year before being traded Saturday, and he allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out five in his Dodgers debut.
Carl Crawford went 3-for-4 with two RBI to highlight an 11-hit attack for LA, which has won five of its last seven games.
"(Correia) threw the ball great," Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez said. "It was a good game all around for us."
Julio Teheran (10-9) suffered a third straight defeat after giving up five runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings. His ERA rose above 3.00 for the first time since his first start of the year.
Justin Upton and Evan Gattis both drove in a run in Atlanta's 10th loss in its last 12 games.
The Dodgers countered Upton's RBI single in the fourth inning with a three-run sixth after being quieted over the first five frames.
Correia, Dee Gordon and Yasiel Puig all singled in the sixth, and Gonzalez lined a base hit to right to bring in the tying run. Crawford beat out an infield single to plate Gordon, and Emilio Bonifacio dropped a potential inning-ending double-play ball off the bat of Justin Turner to make it a 3-1 game.
Crawford singled in another run in the eighth, and the Braves botched another probable double play that would have limited the damage. Instead, an errant throw by Ramiro Pena allowed Crawford and Matt Kemp to score.
Gattis' RBI double in the ninth accounted for the final score.
"We didn't really string together any hits," Braves outfielder B.J. Upton said.
Game Notes
Puig, after sitting out on Sunday because of a sore back, went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scores ... Freddie Freeman had two of Atlanta's six hits ... Braves second baseman Tommy La Stella left the game early with a cramp in his upper right hamstring ... Los Angeles swept a three-game series with the Braves in late July.
