Infante drives in six as Royals rout Orioles
Apr 28, 2014 - 1:11 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Omar Infante tied a career high with six RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to a win 9-3 over the Baltimore Orioles in the rubber match of a three-game set.Infante went 2-for-3 with a homer to back starter James Shields (3-2), who took a one-hitter into the sixth and pitched seven strong innings to earn the win. Shields allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 2.03 for the season.
"He's a tremendous offensive performer and definitely the star of the day today for us," Royals manager Ned Yost said about Infante.
Alex Gordon had two hits and two RBI and Mike Moustakas added an RBI for the Royals.
Nelson Cruz belted his seventh homer of the season to account for Baltimore's offense.
Miguel Gonzalez (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs -- three earned -- over six innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
"A couple of pitches were up on Infante, and he had a great (day). You've got to tip your hat," Gonzalez said.
Nori Aoki reached third on a fielding error by Adam Jones to leadoff the game. Infante followed with an RBI groundout.
Jarrod Dyson led off the third with an infield single, stole second and moved over to third on an Aoki groundout. Infante then brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right.
Alcides Escobar opened the fifth inning with a single and was nearly caught stealing on a pitchout from Gonzalez, but Nick Markakis, starting at first in place of Chris Davis, airmailed the throw during a rundown and Escobar scampered back to first.
Davis landed on the disabled list with a strained left oblique.
Aoki singled two batters later to put runners at the corners before Infante stroked a double that plated two and the Royals increased the cushion to 4-0.
Cruz cut the deficit in half with a two-run blast to left in the bottom of the sixth.
Infante blasted a two-run homer to left in the top of the seventh and Gordon knocked in two with an RBI double later in the inning.
Moustakas crushed a double to center that scored Gordon in the ninth to account for the final margin.
