Shields, Royals aim for series win over O's

Apr 27, 2014 - 1:34 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Kansas City right-hander James Shields makes his 13th career start at Camden Yards - and first as a member of the Royals - when they visit Baltimore to finish up a three-game weekend series with the Orioles.

Shields made 12 starts at Camden Yards while with Tampa Bay and won six of eight decisions there while compiling a 3.92 earned run average.

He's made four of five 2014 starts away from home and is seeking his third straight win outside of Kansas City.

In 11 road starts since last July, Shields is 9-1 with a sterling 1.43 ERA while holding opposition batters to a .190 average. The last time he won three straight road starts was in April-May 2012.

In his last outing, on Tuesday at Cleveland, he gave up one earned run on six hits in an 8-2 triumph.

Right-hander Miguel Gonzalez starts for the Orioles and faces the Royals for the third time in his career. Gonzalez split the decisions in the first two matchups with a 4.97 ERA.

In his two most recent starts this season, Gonzalez has allowed just seven hits in 10 2/3 innings.

Over 22 career appearances at Camden Yards, the 29-year-old is 11-4 with a 3.53 ERA across 127 1/3 innings.

On Saturday, Nick Markakis laced a line drive down the left-field line to bring home the game-winning run in the 10th inning as the Orioles defeated the Royals, 3-2.

Jonathan Schoop was hit by a pitch by reliever Danny Duffy (1-1) to start the frame. David Lough laid down a bunt to Duffy, whose throw missed second, allowing men on first and second with no outs. The Orioles loaded the bases after Jemile Weeks put down a bunt towards third base. Duffy scooped up the ball, but his throw was again off the mark.

Louis Coleman came on to pitch and struck out Nelson Cruz before Markakis provided the Orioles with their third win in their past four games. Weeks and Markakis had two hits apiece and Adam Jones drove in a run.

The Orioles were victorious despite not having Chris Davis in the lineup. The All-Star first baseman strained his left oblique after a third-inning lineout in Friday's game and was placed on the 15-day disabled list after MRI results showed that the injury was more serious than originally thought.

Zach Britton (3-0) struck out a batter in the 10th to strand a runner at second and earn the victory. Starter Wei-Yin Chen surrendered two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts across seven solid innings.

Salvador Perez supplied three hits while Eric Hosmer and Justin Maxwell each had an RBI for Kansas City.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie spun seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Royals won four of seven versus the Orioles a season ago.
