Final/10
Red Sox top Blue Jays in 10 innings
Aug 26, 2014 - 6:11 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Yoenis Cespedes hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox topped the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game set.Brock Holt reached on an infield single against Aaron Sanchez (2-1) with one out in the 10th, stole second when Dustin Pedroia struck out and scored on Cespedes' liner up the middle to help the Red Sox stop an eight-game skid.
Craig Breslow earned his first save of the year with a scoreless 10th. Koji Uehara (6-4) notched the win despite serving up the game-tying, two-run double to Edwin Encarnacion in the bottom of the ninth.
Boston starter Clay Buchholz was cruising, on his way towards his second shutout of the season before Toronto plated three runs in the ninth to tie it. The Blue Jays only put a runner into scoring position in the third prior to the ninth.
In all, Buchholz surrendered three runs on four hits and two walks over 8 1/3 innings.
"Clay was outstanding ... Unfortunately we give up the three inherited runs," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.
Pedroia smacked a two-run homer and Mookie Betts added a solo shot, both in the fifth inning, for the Red Sox.
Toronto has lost five of its last seven contests.
Betts launched a 3-2 pitch into the second deck in left for his second homer. Christian Vazquez walked and Pedroia skied his two-run blast over the wall in left to give Boston its 3-0 lead.
Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera hit one-out singles before Jose Bautista walked to load the bases in the ninth. Adam Lind then grounded into a force out to push across Reyes and Encarnacion banged a double off the top of the wall in left to bring home Cabrera and pinch-runner Steve Tolleson to make it 3-3.
"We needed another foot or two on Eddie's ball, but then couldn't shut them down," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It's disappointing."
