Cardinals top Reds on walk-off HBP
Aug 20, 2014 - 5:22 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jon Jay took one for the team Tuesday and the Reds lost another one because of its bullpen.J.J. Hoover plunked Jay with the bases loaded to push across the deciding run as the Cardinals earned a 5-4 win in walk-off fashion.
"A great ending," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "Terrific job by our guys, fighting back to get in this."
Jay went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and the winning RBI while Jhonny Peralta added a solo homer for St. Louis, which has won six of its last seven games, including a 10-inning victory in the opener of this three-game series.
Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer while Ryan Ludwick added two hits and two RBI for Cincinnati, which has dropped four in a row and seven of eight overall.
The Reds' bullpen, after getting torched for 16 earned runs the previous three games, squandered a 4-3 lead in the eighth.
"We haven't been able to shut the door," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Jumbo Diaz put runners on the corners before Daniel Descalso laced a two-out, pinch-hit double down the left-field line to knock in the tying run.
After getting out of a bases-loaded jam, Hoover (1-10) stayed in for the ninth and gave up a leadoff walk to Matt Holliday and a single to Matt Adams to put runners on the corners. He was ahead 0-2 on Peralta before eventually walking him, and his first pitch to Jay was his last. Jay has been hit by a pitch an MLB-high 15 times this year.
Alfredo Simon allowed an RBI single to Holliday in the third inning but left the bases loaded by retiring Peralta on a flyout to left.
Frazier took John Lackey deep to straightaway center in the fourth with Billy Hamilton aboard, and Ludwick added a two-run single down the left-field line with the bases loaded in the sixth.
Peralta sent one into Big Mac Land for his 17th home run of the season in the sixth, and the Cardinals threatened for more later in the frame.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Shane Robinson, pinch-hitting for Lackey, sent a single to center field. Jay hustled around to score from second just before Oscar Taveras was cut down at third base.
Game Notes
