DeGrom sterling as Mets blank Rockies
Sep 10, 2014 - 4:40 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom pitched a career-high eight scoreless innings to lead the New York Mets to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies in the second meeting of a three-game set.DeGrom (8-6) held the highest-scoring team in the National League to just three hits, walked none and struck out nine for the Mets, who have won five of six.
The right-hander retired the final 14 batters he faced and now has not allowed an earned run in 22 consecutive innings. DeGrom, who is 7-1 with a 1.60 ERA over his last 10 outings, has won five straight starts at Citi Field.
"We are going to be very, very careful with these guys in the last month," Mets manager Terry Collins said of his young staff. "If it were July, Jacob would have pitched the ninth."
Juan Lagares and Curtis Granderson each supplied New York with an RBI.
Christian Bergman (2-3) was saddled with the loss after going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits.
Colorado got its only real scoring chance against deGrom by putting runners at the corners with two outs in the second. He worked out of trouble, however, striking out DJ LeMahieu to escape the early jam.
New York broke the scoreless stalemate on an RBI single off the bat of Lagares in the fifth. Matt den Dekker doubled to left, moved to third on a groundout, then scored on Lagares' two-out hit to left.
Some more two-out hitting helped the Mets add an insurance run in the sixth. Travis d'Arnaud singled preceding Granderson's run-scoring double to right. Granderson moved to third on a throwing error by Charlie Blackmon on the play, but Wilmer Flores ended the inning with a groundout to Bergman.
With a runner on first and one out in the ninth, Mets closer Jenrry Mejia allowed a single to Justin Morneau before walking Nolan Arenado. Left-hander Josh Edgin came on in relief and fanned Corey Dickerson for the second out, then Jeurys Familia made it three outs for three relievers by inducing a groundout from Wilin Rosario to record his fifth save of the season.
