Mets turn to deGrom against Rockies

Sep 9, 2014 - 2:29 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom gets a chance to continue a solid stretch of mound work for the New York Mets on Tuesday when they host the Colorado Rockies in the middle contest of a three-game series at Citi Field.

New York enters having won four of its last five games, a stretch during which its starters have held foes to just six earned runs in 32 2/3 innings. Monday's starter, Jonathon Niese, allowed a single run in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-2 victory in the opener.

DeGrom is 6-1 in his last nine starts with a stingy 1.81 earned run average, third-best in the majors since early July. He came back with a 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers after a stint on the disabled list with tendinitis, but has since beaten Philadelphia and Miami while allowing just two unearned runs in 13 innings.

He's won four in a row at Citi Field, too, striking out 31 batters in 28 1/3 innings and allowing only three runs.

The Mets should get Daniel Murphy -- the team's leader in batting average and runs scored -- back on Tuesday after he was shelved in late August with a calf injury.

Colorado got Michael Cuddyer back on Monday after a disabled list stay of his own, and he homered in his initial game, just his 35th contest of the season.

"I was able to get a good pitch to hit and fortunately I didn't miss it," he said.

DeGrom is opposed by fellow rookie Christian Bergman, who's won two decisions in three starts since he came back from a fractured thumb. In his most recent start, on Wednesday, he allowed two runs in six innings while defeating San Francisco, 9-2.

On Monday, Wilmer Flores drove a sacrifice fly to center that capped a two-run rally in the ninth and lifted the Mets to a 3-2 win over Colorado.

Travis d'Arnaud began the ninth with a double off Rockies closer LaTroy Hawkins (3-3), then Curtis Granderson tied the game with a triple to right- center. Flores followed with a shallow fly to center that allowed Granderson to try for the win. Drew Stubbs settled under the fly, but his throw home was up the third-base line as Granderson slid in safely.

Carlos Torres (7-5) picked up the win for the Mets, who have won five of their last six.
