Carter hits 2 HRs, Astros top Angels
Sep 4, 2014 - 6:18 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Carter smacked a pair of homers and the Houston Astros beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 4-1, to sweep a brief two-game set.Carter cracked a two-run and solo shot for the Astros, who have won four straight games.
"Mr. Carter has really improved," Houston manager Tom Lawless said. "When he gets the barrel on the baseball, it can go."
Collin McHugh (8-9) struck out eight and allowed a run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings to notch the win. Chad Qualls fired a 1-2-3 ninth for his 17th save of the year.
Kole Calhoun had two of the Angels' four hits. Jered Weaver (15-8) fanned six and surrendered two runs on five hits and two walks for the Halos, who have dropped two in a row on the heels of a six-game winning streak.
"We have seen (McHugh) a couple of times and felt we had a good approach last time," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "We didn't get too many good looks (tonight)."
The game was tied 1-1 before Houston plated a run in the fourth to go ahead.
Dexter Fowler worked a one-out walk and after Carter lined out, he stole second during Jason Castro's at-bat. Castro then blooped a base hit to right to bring home Fowler.
The Astros added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth.
Jose Altuve hit a one-out double and Carter launched his two-run shot the opposite way and just over the wall in right to give the Astros a 4-1 advantage.
Houston opened the scoring in the second when Carter slugged a towering blast onto the train tracks in left. The Angels got the run back in the third. Efren Navarro scored from third on a fielding error by Jonathan Villar when he was unable to handle Mike Trout's hot-shot bouncer to shortstop.
Game Notes
Carter has 14 homers in his last 30 games and 35 overall on the season ... The Angels' Erick Aybar had his 17-game hitting streak snapped ... Houston was 2- for-6 with runners in scoring position, while the Angels finished 0-for-5.
