Keuchel stellar as Astros end Angels' winning streak
Sep 14, 2014 - 11:37 PM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dallas Keuchel pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Houston Astros ended the Los Angeles Angels' 10-game winning streak with a 6-1 victory on Sunday.Keuchel (11-9) was perfect through five innings and allowed just one run on three hits with a walk and four strikeouts over seven-plus innings to win his first game since July 30.
"Dallas shut them down and kept them off-balanced," said Astros interim manager Tom Lawless. "We got contributions from everybody up and down the lineup today."
Gregorio Petit hit a three-run homer and Robbie Grossman hit a two-run single for Houston, which avoided a three-game series sweep.
David Freese drove in the lone run for the Angels, who were in search of matching the franchise record of 11 straight wins that was set in June of 1964.
Starter Hector Santiago (5-8), who entered the game with five straight winning decisions, gave up three runs on five hits and five walks over two-plus innings.
"Hector was erratic with everything," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We got so far behind and never pressured them on the offensive side."
Jake Marisnick singled to lead off the second. Carlos Corporan walked and moved up to second after Marisnick was caught in a rundown while trying to steal third. Matt Dominguez worked a two-out walk before Petit crushed a 3-1 fastball to left for a 3-0 lead.
The Astros added two more runs in the fifth. Cam Bedrosian walked Carlos Corporan to start the frame, Petit hit a two-out double and Grossman brought them both home with a liner to center for a 5-0 score.
Marisnick's base knock up the middle with one out in the sixth drove in Dexter Fowler, who doubled to start the frame.
Meanwhile, Keuchel was perfect until he issued a walk to Chris Iannetta on a full count to start the sixth. He kept his no-hitter intact after getting C.J. Cron to hit into a double play and Collin Cowgill to ground out.
Mike Trout ended Keuchel's no-hit bid with one out in the seventh on a soft fly ball into left-center field.
Gordon Beckham led off the home eighth with a liner that eluded the glove of a diving Marisnick in right for a double. Keuchel's outing ended after he gave up an RBI single up the middle to Freese. Jose Veras came in and retired the next three batters.
Game Notes
Houston's last no-hitter was a combined effort. Roy Oswalt, Pete Munro, Kirk Saarloos, Brad Lidge, Octavio Dotel and Billy Wagner held the New York Yankees hitless on June 11, 2003. The Astros have never thrown a perfect game ... Astros designated hitter Chris Carter extended his hitting streak to a career- best 12 games ... It was Santiago's first loss since June 15th at Atlanta.
