Brewers torch Wainwright to beat Cardinals
Aug 2, 2014 - 5:55 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Aramis Ramirez homered and drove in two runs and the Milwaukee Brewers torched St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright for seven runs in a 7-4 win to open a three-game series Friday night.Ramirez had three hits and Jonathan Lucroy added two, including a three-run double as the Brewers won their second in a row.
Wainwright (13-6) had only given up more than two runs once in his past nine starts but was dusted for nine hits in 5 1/3 innings Friday. He walked three and struck out five.
Wily Peralta (13-6) went 6 2/3 innings for Milwaukee, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks to earn his fourth straight win.
"We'll just continue hopefully to play good baseball," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "We need to concentrate on every game. They're all important."
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was ejected by second base umpire Will Little after coming to the mound to pull Wainwright in the sixth inning.
Little called a balk on Wainwright in the fifth inning and called Jean Segura safe at second on a close play in the sixth that the Cardinals challenged, to no avail. Though it appeared he made only a brief comment to the umpire as he walked off the mound, Matheny said he gave Little "every reason" to eject him.
"What I saw was wrong," Matheny said.
Ramirez knocked a 3-0 pitch into the visitors bullpen leading off the second inning, his 13th homer of the season, for Milwaukee's first run. Wainwright got out of a bases-loaded jam when Peralta grounded into an inning-ending double play, but the Brewers scored again in the third when Ramirez doubled in Lucroy to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Carlos Gomez hit a one-out single, went to second on the balk and scored on Ryan Braun's ground-rule double to right field to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead.
After Segura and Elian Herrera moved up to second and third base on Peralta's sacrifice bunt in the sixth, Wainwright hit Gomez and gave up a three-run double to Lucroy before he was pulled. Braun added an RBI double off Seth Maness to make it 7-0.
Matt Holliday homered to start the sixth inning and Matt Carpenter had an RBI single off Peralta in the seventh. Carpenter added a two-run triple in the ninth inning off Zach Duke.
Game Notes
Gerardo Parra, who was acquired by the Brewers from Arizona in exchange for a pair of minor league players before Thursday's trade deadline, came in as a defensive substitution at left field in the seventh inning and struck out in the eighth ... The Cardinals started a six-game road trip that will also take them to Boston. They acquired veteran starter John Lackey from the Red Sox on Thursday ahead of the non-waiver trade deadline.
