Bloomquist, Mariners beat Mets
Jul 22, 2014 - 6:46 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Willie Bloomquist went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored as the Seattle Mariners defeated the New York Mets, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set.Kyle Seager had a pair of hits and two RBI, while Dustin Ackley smacked three hits, drove in a run and made a spectacular leaping catch at the wall in left to take a homer away from Travis d'Arnaud in the sixth.
Roenis Elias (8-8) struck out eight and allowed a run on five hits and two walks over 5 1/3 frames for Seattle. Mike Zunino smacked a solo homer in the victory.
"He was outstanding and that was really good to see ... threw the ball really well." Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of Elias.
Jonathon Niese (5-5) surrendered four runs on 11 hits and two walks over six innings for the Mets, who have dropped three straight.
"My control was okay, my command wasn't," said Niese. "I left too many balls over the plate, wasn't hitting the corners like I wanted to."
The game was tied 1-1 before the Mariners plated two in the third and another in the fourth to surge ahead.
Zunino cracked a first-pitch leadoff shot into the seats in left. Bloomquist and James Jones then singled before Robinson Cano grounded out to put runners on second and third. Seager drove in Bloomquist with a base hit to left-center before Stefen Romero grounded into a double play to end the frame.
Corey Hart worked a one-out walk in the fourth and Ackley singled. Bloomquist cracked a ground-rule double two batters later to bring home Hart and give the M's a 4-1 cushion.
Ackley's RBI double in the eighth made it 5-1, while a Cano fielding error on a sharply hit grounder by Daniel Murphy in the ninth led to a Mets run to cap the scoring.
Earlier, Seattle opened the scoring on Seager's RBI single in the first, but New York got the run back in the third on a David Wright run-scoring base hit.
Game Notes
Seattle was 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while New York finished 1-for-7 and left 10 men on base ... Zunino's blast was his 14th of the season.
