Nats get back to winning ways behind Zimmermann
Aug 24, 2014 - 12:17 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jayson Werth drove in two runs to back eight dominant innings by Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington Nationals got back on track with a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday.Zimmermann (9-5) struck out eight in eight innings of two-run ball for Washington, which lost on Friday to snap a 10-game winning streak.
Asdrubal Cabrera homered and scored twice, while Denard Span and Anthony Rendon also finished with a pair of runs apiece for Washington, which did all of its damage in the first three innings.
Span set the tone with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and after Rendon drew a walk, Werth singled in a run with a line drive to right- center. Rendon scored on Adam LaRoche's double-play grounder.
A pair of mistakes led to more Nationals runs in the second. Cabrera walked, moved to second on Zimmermann's sacrifice and scored on Span's single to center. Span advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Pablo Sandoval sailed his throw to first following Rendon's innocent grounder to third. Werth made it 5-2 with his second RBI single in as many innings.
Cabrera's solo shot with two outs in the third made it 6-2.
Tim Lincecum (10-9) was pulled after 2 2/3 innings for the second shortest outing of his career. He was charged with all six runs -- four earned -- on six hits and four walks.
The two-time Cy Young winner failed to pick up his 100th career win at the hands of the team that has hit him the hardest over the years. Lincecum fell to 0-6 in his last seven starts against the Nationals.
Yusmeiro Petit tossed 4 1/3 perfect innings in relief of Lincecum, fanning five.
Hunter Pence hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for the lone San Francisco runs.
