Yankees top Tigers, Eovaldi ends winless stretch
Apr 22, 2015 - 4:29 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Nathan Eovaldi halted an eight-month winless drought by firing seven-plus strong innings that steered the New York Yankees to a 5-2 decision over the Detroit Tigers.Aided by four double plays and solo homers by Chris Young and Stephen Drew, Eovaldi (1-0) limited Detroit's powerful offense to one run on eight hits to notch his first victory since Aug. 8 of last season. The offseason acquisition had gone 0-8 with three no-decisions over his previous 11 starts.
"I was able to command the ball, I was moving it inside and out," said Eovaldi. "I was able to make the big pitches when I needed to."
Young finished 3-for-3 and ended a triple shy of the cycle, while Drew and Brett Gardner each had two hits and combined for three runs to help the Yankees hand the Tigers just their third loss in 14 games this season.
J.D. Martinez went 3-for-4 and scored both runs for Detroit, which halted New York's three-game win streak with a 2-1 triumph in Monday's opener of this four-game set.
Tigers starter Kyle Lobstein (1-1) pitched well in a tough-luck defeat, permitting only one run and three hits while walking four over six effective innings.
"The guys battled," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "But obviously we fell short."
The only damage off Lobstein came in the opening inning, as the rookie walked Gardner in front of Mark Teixeira's two-out double down the right-field line that staked the Yankees to a quick 1-0 edge.
Eovaldi made the lead stand up by getting clutch outs with runners on base. Detroit put the leadoff man aboard in four of the first six innings, only to have him erased on a double play on three of those occasions.
Lobstein kept Detroit in it by successfully mixing pitches and keeping the Yankee hitters off balance. However, New York broke the game open against the Tigers' bullpen in the seventh.
Young greeted Ian Krol with a leadoff blast into the visitors bullpen and Drew took the lefty over the wall in right two batters later for a 3-0 advantage. The Yankees tacked on another run when Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk and later crossed the plate on a wild pitch from Al Alburquerque.
Eovaldi had his shutout bid finally foiled in Detroit's half of the seventh, as Martinez doubled and scored on Yoenis Cespedes' sac fly after advancing to third on a wild pitch. The Yankee right-hander's strong outing came to a close when Avila doubled to open the bottom of the eighth.
Gardner singled and scored on a two-out error by Castellanos to give the Yankees an insurance run in the ninth. Detroit threatened in the bottom of the frame, loading the bases with two out when Martinez singled, Cespedes doubled off Chris Martin and Andrew Miller entered for New York and promptly walked Nick Castellanos.
Miller then issued another free pass to pinch-hitter Rajai Davis that forced in Martinez, but struck out Jose Iglesias to receive a one-out save.
Game Notes
Eovaldi had been 0-5 with a 6.23 ERA over his previous six road starts ... Castellanos' single in the third inning extended his hitting streak to a career-best nine games ... Teixeira has driven in at least one run in four straight games and nine of his last 11 contests ... Nineteen of Young's 31 hits since joining the Yankees last September have gone for extra bases (12 doubles, seven HR).
