Morse lifts Marlins past Mets
Apr 29, 2015 - 5:36 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Morse hit an RBI single in the eighth inning, lifting the Miami Marlins to a 4-3 win over the New York Mets on Tuesday night.Dee Gordon had two hits and scored a run, helping the Marlins beat the Mets for the first time in six meetings this season.
Juan Lagares hit a three-run double for the Mets, and Daniel Murphy finished 3-for-4 after connecting for the go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning of a 3-1 win in Monday's opener of this three-game series.
The Marlins grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Gordon led off with a single to right field and took second base when Curtis Granderson bobbled the ball. After a sacrifice bunt, Giancarlo Stanton sent a 3-2 pitch from New York starter Rafael Montero to left field for an RBI single.
Marcell Ozuna then reached on an infield hit, and J.T. Realmuto drove in Stanton with a two-out single up the middle to center field. Buddy Carlyle relieved Montero and threw a wild pitch to score Ozuna.
Miami starter David Phelps allowed five hits -- all with two outs -- through the first six innings, but was removed after the first two batters singled in the seventh.
Granderson's one-out hit loaded the bases for Lagares and his double to center off reliever A.J. Ramos cleared them and tied the game.
After Bryan Morris (3-0) stranded two Mets runners in the top of the eighth, the Marlins broke the tie in the bottom of the inning. Carlos Torres (1-1) issued two walks before Morse singled home Martin Prado, who slid in ahead of the throw from Lagares.
Steve Cishek gave up the home run to Murphy on Monday, but he was able to bounce back and close the door in the ninth this time. Cishek pitched around a leadoff walk to Granderson to earn his second save.
"Steve's a huge part of our team and our bullpen. To be able to get him in the game after last night was huge," said Miami manager Mike Redmond.
The Mets recalled Montero from Triple-A Las Vegas to make a spot start in order to give the rotation an extra day of rest.
He was perfect through the first three innings, then worked around a leadoff double by Gordon in the fourth. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out Phelps to strand two runners in the fifth.
"Very impressive. Very good location," Mets manager Terry Collins said about Montero. "Early in the game he had a little too many 3-2 counts, but he made the pitches when he had to make them. I thought he threw the ball very, very well tonight."
Phelps pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the fourth and fanned Ruben Tejada to end the sixth with two runners on base.
Game Notes
The Marlins were 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position, while the Mets finished 2-for-10 in such situations and left 10 men on base ... Montero gave up five hits and struck out six in 5 2/3 innings.
