Mets eye series win in Miami
Apr 28, 2015 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy was the hero in the opener of this three-game series with the Miami Marlins and the two clubs will compete again Tuesday in south Florida.Murphy erased a 1-0 deficit with a three-run homer off of Marlins reliever Steve Cishek in the top of the ninth inning.
"Murphy has reviewed some stuff, worked on some things," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "It was Dan's night."
Mets closer Jeurys Familia took care of business in the bottom of the inning for his major league-leading ninth save of the season.
Juan Lagares had two hits and Mets starter Dillon Gee was sharp through 7 2/3 innings, yielding just a run with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Mets are an impressive 15-5 on the season.
New York hurler Rafael Montero is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in time to take the hill in Miami. Montero is 1-0 with a 5.87 earned run average in two starts with the 51's.
The right-hander began the season in the bullpen and went 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 10 games (8 starts) last season.
Miami had its five-game winning streak stopped last night, as Jarred Cosart's eight scoreless innings went to waste. He allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out two batters.
Cishek, of course, served up Murphy's deciding home run.
"It was just poor execution," Cishek said. "It's tough, especially how well we have been playing."
David Phelps gets the nod for Miami and is 1-0 with a 3.55 earned run average in four games, two of which have been starts. He was brilliant the last time out in a 9-1 bashing of Philadelphia last Thursday, hurling seven shutout innings of three-hit ball.
Phelps, a right-hander, has made two career starts against the Mets and has an 0-1 record with a 9.00 ERA. He tossed 4 2/3 innings in a 4-1 loss against the Mets on April 17 at Citi Field and yielded one run and one hit.
The Marlins were swept in four games by the Mets from April 16-19 at Citi Field and have lost 13 of the previous 16 games in this series.
