Odorizzi pitches Rays past Red Sox

May 5, 2015 - 5:16 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Odorizzi silenced the Red Sox over seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays won 5-1 to open a three-game series in Boston.

Odorizzi (3-2) allowed seven hits with no walks and six strikeouts to help Tampa Bay snap a two-game slide.

Joey Butler's first career homer was a two-run blast for the Rays, who also received two RBI from David DeJesus and another from Evan Longoria.

Clay Buchholz (1-4) overcame a slow start and pitched into the seventh but still suffered the loss. He struck out seven over 6 1/3 innings and was charged with five runs on nine hits

The Rays, after scoring just four runs in three games against the Orioles over the weekend, pushed four across in their first two at-bats against Buchholz.

They nearly went down in order in the first, but Hanley Ramirez dropped a ball after crashing into the wall in left field. James Loney was credited with a double and Ramirez, who suffered a sprained left shoulder, was replaced in the field by Allen Craig.

"He's day-to-day," Red Sox manager John Ferrell said of Ramirez going forward. "We're hopeful in the next couple of days there's some improvement."

Longoria followed with career hit No. 999 -- an RBI double down the left-field line -- and DeJesus hit a hard ground ball to second that ate up Dustin Pedroia for another run.

Butler, the 12th different rookie to play for the Rays this season, smacked his memorable home run in the second frame. After Asdrubal Cabrera led off with a single, Butler turned on an 0-1 offspeed pitch and lined it over the Green Monster for a 4-0 lead.

"It kind of took the crowd out of the game," Odorizzi said of the early lead. "They (the fans) were pretty quiet tonight."

Brock Holt tripled with two away in the bottom half, and Steven Souza Jr. misplayed Xander Bogaerts' liner down the right-field line to bring in Boston's only run.

DeJesus added another RBI single through the right side in the seventh, and the combination of Ernesto Frieri and Erasmo Ramirez held the Red Sox hitless over the final two frames.

Game Notes

The Rays have challenged 11 plays this season and none have been overturned ... The Rays have gone 13 consecutive games since last allowing 10 hits, one away from the club set in 2008 ... Buchholz had not allowed a home run in his previous six starts at Fenway Park ... Odorizzi has not allowed a home run in six starts, tying a franchise mark to start a season.
