Marlins beat Strasburg, Nationals
May 6, 2015 - 4:32 AM Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Mat Latos pitched 6 1/3 innings of one- run ball and the Miami Marlins beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 on Tuesday.Latos (1-3) yielded just two hits while striking out six, though he did walk five batters. The win snapped a streak of seven straight starts without a win for the veteran righty going back to last season.
His counterpart, Stephen Strasburg, was touched for two runs on four hits in just three innings before leaving with an apparent right shoulder injury.
Strasburg (2-3) allowed two baserunners in the first inning, but ran into real trouble in the second.
J.T. Realmuto opened the frame. with a triple and scored on Ichiro Suzuki's base knock to left. Strasburg then hit Adeiny Hechavarria with a pitch and allowed the second run to score on his first throwing error of the season. Three straight outs -- a pair of line outs and a fly to center -- got Strasburg out of the inning.
Two more baserunners in the top of the third inning led Nationals manager Matt Williams to pinch-hit for Strasburg in the home third, ending his outing at 64 pitches.
"I felt like I could have gotten through it," Strasburg said. "But at this point of the season you just want to get it right."
Sammy Solis tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Strasburg. Blake Treinen and Matt Thornton didn't allow any runs in the seventh and eighth, respectively, but Washington's bats couldn't do enough at the plate for it to matter.
The Nationals' only run came in the bottom of the second, when Dan Uggla's groundout allowed Ryan Zimmerman to trot home.
They threatened again in the seventh, when a pair of walks around a strikeout of Ian Desmond led to Latos leaving the game in favor of Nick Masset. Masset got Michael Taylor to ground into a fielder's choice before pinch-hitter Clint Robinson grounded out to second.
Steve Cishek came on in the ninth and allowed two quick baserunners before settling down and recording his third save.
"We made pitches when we needed to and picked up a win," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
