Yankees pummel Angels thanks to early offense
Jun 7, 2015 - 4:53 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian McCann hit a two-run homer in a six-run first-inning burst which chased Garrett Richards, as the New York Yankees topped the LA Angels of Anaheim by an 8-2 count in the second edition of a three-game series.Brett Gardner had two hits and drove in a pair for the Yankees, with Mark Teixeira adding two RBI and Carlos Beltran contributing two hits and a run driven in.
Adam Warren (4-4) walked three but gave up just two runs on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in the Bombers' fifth straight triumph.
"He's getting more comfortable," said McCann. "His makeup is off the charts and he's got four quality pitches."
Mike Trout homered and Johnny Giavotella brought home the other run for the Angels, who posted a mere five hits in their fourth consecutive defeat.
Richards (5-4) failed to make it out of the first inning, charged with six runs on five hits and two walks while retiring only two batters.
"I felt great tonight," said Richards. "My delivery felt as good as it did all year ... just one of those nights."
The Angels' right-hander got into trouble right away. He walked Gardner, Chase Headley singled and Alex Rodriguez worked a base on balls ahead of a Teixeira sacrifice fly. A wild pitch then plated Headley and McCann's two-run blast to right center provided a four-run margin.
Beltran singled, Didi Gregorius singled and Stephen Drew beat Albert Pujols to first base on a grounder to re-load the sacks. Two batters later, Gardner's single brought in Beltran and Gregorius for a 6-0 score.
Beltran singled home Teixeira in the second to extend the advantage to seven.
The Halos finally hit the scoreboard in the fifth when Matt Joyce stroked a leadoff double, moved up on a Carlos Perez fly out and scored on Giavotella's fly to left.
Trout's leadoff homer brought the score to 7-2 in the sixth, and Warren exited after walking Giavotella in the seventh. Justin Wilson recorded the final out and then worked a quiet eighth.
Teixeira worked a bases loaded walk in the home eighth for an 8-2 lead.
Chris Capuano fanned two in a scoreless ninth.
Game Notes
The Yankees have scored six-or-more runs in the first inning four times already this season, a feat not accomplished since 1948 ... Richards was also forced to exit after just two-thirds of an inning in a start against the Athletics last May 30, a 9-5 Oakland victory where he was charged with five runs on as many hits with three walks ... Angels third baseman David Freese doubled to keep his hit streak alive at 10 games.
