Castillo helps Diamondbacks edge Mets

Jun 7, 2015 - 5:27 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Welington Castillo's two-run homer in the seventh inning wrecked Bartolo Colon's chance at win No. 9, as the Arizona Diamondbacks held off the New York Mets, 2-1, Saturday night.

Colon (8-4) gave up five hits, walked one and had seven strikeouts over his seven-inning performance. The 42-year-old right-hander faltered on two pitches that changed the complexion of the game.

"He pitched his heart out tonight, but we couldn't get him any runs. That's just part of the game," Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Chris Owings singled sharply to left field with two outs in the seventh. On the next pitch, Castillo sent a line drive over the wall in left. It was Castillo's first hit in an Arizona uniform. He came to the Diamondbacks in a trade that sent Mark Trumbo to Seattle earlier in the week.

"That was fantastic," said D-backs manager Chip Hale. "We know this guy can hit, he just needs at-bats ... he picked a good time to hit his first home run for us."

The Mets had 10 hits, including a homer to right by Juan Lagares in the second inning in the third portion of this four-game series. New York, though, grounded into four double plays, including one that ended the game.

Chase Anderson gave up eight hits and fanned six over 5 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks. Randall Delgado (3-2) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning.

Brad Ziegler gave up a single to Eric Campbell with one out in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Darrell Ceciliani was then awarded first base when the glove of Castillo made contact with the Ceciliani's bat during a foul ball. John Mayberry Jr. was up next and hit a high chopper to third base. Jake Lamb, who was reinstated from the disabled list Saturday, stepped on third and threw across the diamond to end the contest. Ziegler earned his sixth save.

Arizona has won four of its last six games, while the Mets have dropped four of five.

Game Notes

Colon has received a decision in each of his last 23 outings. Dwight Gooden pitched in a franchise-record 25 straight games without receiving a no- decision from June 2, 1993-June 24, 1994 ... Hale was ejected for the first time in his career. It happened after the bottom of the sixth inning when he argued with umpire Mark Ripperger following a strikeout of Paul Goldschmidt ... Lamb was shelved due to a left foot stress reaction which landed him on the DL April 21. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Diamondbacks designated catcher/infielder Jordan Pacheco for assignment.
