Mets send Colon to hill against D-backs

Jun 6, 2015 - 1:37 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Bartolo Colon gets the call for the New York Mets Saturday in the third portion of a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The Mets hope Colon can play stopper for a club that has lost three of four and five of the last eight games.

Colon has won back-to-back starts and is 4-2 in his previous six decisions. In 11 total starts, the bulky right-hander has an 8-3 record to go along with a 4.72 earned run average. In a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday, Colon was reached for three runs in seven innings and scattered six hits. He has allowed at least three runs in the past five trips to the hill.

In one career start against the Diamondbacks, Colon gave up four runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Colon is 3-1 in four road assignments this season.

New York won the opener of this desert series 6-2 on Thursday, but dropped a 7-2 decision Friday night. Jon Niese was handed the loss for allowing three runs in six innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

"I thought he threw the ball well," said Mets manager Terry Collins. "We just couldn't give him any runs to work with."

Michael Cuddyer homered and the Mets fell to 2-2 on a seven-game trek.

The D-backs have won three of four and five of their last eight games.

Jeremy Hellickson picked up the win last night with six innings of two-run ball and A.J. Pollock finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored.

"He's doing everything," D-backs outfielder Ender Inciarte said of Pollock. "He's stealing bases, he's taking the extra base, he's hitting home runs and right now him and Goldy (Paul Goldschmidt) are amazing. They are doing unbelievable things."

Pollock is riding a six-game hit streak with two or more hits in five of those contests.

Chase Anderson draws the start for Arizona Saturday and is 1-1 with a 3.26 earned run average in 10 outings. Anderson is 1-0 in his last six appearances and pitched poorly in Sunday's 7-6 defeat at Milwaukee, surrendering six runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Anderson has allowed 10 hits in back-to-back performances. He has never faced the Mets and is 0-1 with a 3.70 ERA in four home starts.

The Mets were 4-2 versus the D-backs last season.
