Padres top Rockies on wild pitch
Apr 15, 2014 - 7:32 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - San Diego scored two runs thanks to a wild pitch and bad throw to take a 5-4 win over Colorado in the opener of a three- game set.Rex Brothers (1-2) walked Xavier Nady and Seth Smith to start the frame, but then recorded outs with the next two batters. Yonder Alonso then walked to load the bases and with Yasmani Grandal at the plate, Brothers uncorked a wild pitch.
The ball rolled back to the wall and Wilin Rosario tried to throw it back to the plate, but the ball went past Brothers and two runs scored for a 5-4 lead.
Huston Street then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Tommy Medica, Everth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista each drove in a run for the Padres, who have won four of five.
Eric Stults pitched five innings and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits. Dale Thayer (2-0) got the win for firing a perfect eighth.
"We talked about before the game being patient and if you look at the whole game I think we did that," said San Diego manager Bud Black. "We got a good start from Stults and the bullpen did a fantastic job."
Rosario blasted a two-run shot while Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu each drove in a run for the Rockies, who have dropped three of four. Jordan Lyles gave up three runs on six hits over five innings of work.
Colorado also lost right fielder Michael Cuddyer to a right elbow injury as he crashed into the wall and banged his elbow on the ground while trying to make a play on an Amarista triple in the fifth inning.
"I probably could have finished the inning, but 10 minutes later I could hardly move," Cuddyer said.
Cuddyer was diagnosed with an elbow contusion and is listed as day-to-day.
Colorado worked a run across in the third inning when Charlie Blackmon singled to start the frame, moved to second on a bad throw from Everth Cabrera on a Carlos Gonzalez line out, then came home as Tulowitzki hit a grounder back to the mound that Stults threw away for a 1-0 lead.
The Rockies added another run in the fourth when three straight singles saw the team score a run as D.J. LeMahieu's base hit to left plated Justin Morneau for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Tulowitzki led off with a single and Rosario followed with his second home run of the year for a 4-0 advantage.
The Padres, though, got back into the contest in the home half of the fifth as Yonder Alonso got the frame started with a single. The next two batters recorded outs, but Medica's pinch-hit double scored a run, Cabrera's double brought home Medica, and Amarista's triple plated Cabrera for a 4-3 game.
