Mets eye first road sweep of D'backs since 2006
Apr 16, 2014 - 1:08 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets can complete their first series sweep at Chase Field since 2006 on Wednesday afternoon, when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks to complete a three-game set.The Mets have outscored Arizona, 16-3, in the initial two games of the series and have posted 29 runs while winning four straight overall games in the Phoenix ballpark.
New York will try for its first road sweep in this series since a four-game set from June 8-11, 2006.
The Diamondbacks will try to avoid that by sending out right-hander Brandon McCarthy.
McCarthy has given up six runs in two straight starts, including a 6-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his most recent appearance on Friday.
He lost his lone career start against the Mets, 4-1, after surrendering two runs in seven innings.
A win for New York would get them above .500 for the first time in nearly 12 months. The Mets were 10-9 last season on April 24, but finished 74-88 for the second straight year.
Right-hander Dillon Gee gets the start for New York.
Gee is 1-1 in four career starts against Arizona with a 3.75 ERA, and he's coming off a no-decision in his last start, in which he allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings of a game the Mets ultimately lost, 5-4, to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
He's allowed five home runs in three 2014 starts.
On Tuesday, Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Mets defeated the Diamondbacks, 9-0.
Nieuwenhuis was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to the game to replace outfielder Juan Lagares on the active roster. The Mets placed Lagares on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled right hamstring. New York was also without right fielder Curtis Granderson, who is considered day-to-day after running into the fence, injuring his rib and forearm in Monday's win.
Eric Young collected three hits with two RBI and two runs scored and Andrew Brown also knocked in two runs starting in place of Granderson.
New York starter Jenrry Mejia (2-0) went five innings and allowed just two hits with three strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. Mejia was cruising through the Diamondbacks order, but was taken out of the game after five scoreless frames because of a blister on his throwing hand.
The Mets have won four of seven versus the Diamondbacks in each of the previous two seasons.
