Hanigan, Rays hammer Yankees

Apr 20, 2014 - 4:54 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Tampa Bay Rays hit five homers, including two apiece by Wil Myers and Ryan Hanigan, and Chris Archer remained unbeaten against the New York Yankees after a 16-1 rout on Saturday.

Archer (2-1) struck out four, didn't issue a walk and gave up three hits and one run. The right-hander went 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA in three starts against the Yankees last season.

He had plenty of help in this one, even if he didn't need much.

Hanigan had six RBI and Myers and Evan Longoria each knocked in four runs for the Rays, who have won the last two games of the four-game set by a combined score of 27-6.

The 27 runs are 11 more than they scored in their previous 10 games.

"We've been swinging the bats the whole season without any luck," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "I'm proud of the guys how they've hung in there as things haven't gone well offensively."

Longoria broke Carlos Pena's franchise home run record with a two-run shot in the third inning, his second of the season and 164th of his career, all with the Rays.

Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova (2-2) shook his arm after throwing a pitch in the fifth inning and was taken out.

Nova was charged with eight runs on eight hits and a walk and struck out four. He gave up Tampa Bay's first four home runs as his ERA ballooned 2.33 points to 8.27 in four starts.

The game was so lopsided Yankees shortstop Dean Anna pitched in the eighth inning, throwing knuckle balls. Hanigan hit one for a two-run single for his last two RBI.

"When you see me in there, it's not a good day," said Anna. "It was fun, but not fun at all."

Four of Tampa Bay's first six hits were home runs to the left side.

Myers stroked a one-out curveball into the seats in the second inning for his first homer of the season, and Hanigan led off the third by lining a fastball inside the left-field pole. Ben Zobrist then singled with one out and scored when Longoria's high blast landed deep in the seats.

Myers walked to lead off the fourth inning and came around on Hanigan's second homer of the game, a line drive to left-center that made it 6-0.

Kelly Johnson doubled in Alfonso Soriano for New York's only run in the fifth, but the Rays scored four more in the bottom of the inning for a 10-1 lead.

Nova had a 1-1 count on Longoria when he was relieved by Matt Daley, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Longoria for Tampa Bay's seventh run. Myers lined his second homer to left field to make it 10-1 after James Loney walked.

Tampa Bay also scored four in the sixth inning. Longoria singled and Loney doubled to drive in runs and Hanigan walked to push another one across.
