Phils try to close out swing with series win over D'backs
Apr 27, 2014 - 2:43 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies will try to close out their road trip with a winning record on Sunday afternoon as they take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game series. The Phillies moved to 5-4 on a 10-game swing out west with Saturday night's 6-5 win, rallying for four runs in the eighth inning.
Ben Revere singled in the go-ahead run in the frame, while Cody Asche drove in two runs on a pinch-hit double in the eighth. Carlos Ruiz went 3-for-4, including an RBI single in the eighth, as the Phillies won for the fifth time in seven games.
"They had an error and then we put some hits together and the guys clutched up with the men on base," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of the eighth- inning rally. "The guys hung in there and gritted it out. It was a good character game for us."
Jonathon Papelbon picked up his seventh save of the season with the help of a challenge. Martin Prado attempted to steal second on a ball thrown in the dirt and was initially called safe, but the call was overturned as he came off the base when Chase Utley tagged him.
Cody Ross had two hits and three RBI and A.J. Pollock went 3-for-5 and drove in a run for the Diamondbacks, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Paul Goldschmidt scored once and had an RBI.
Trevor Cahill suffered the loss and blown save after allowing three runs in the eighth.
"I think I was just overthrowing," Cahill said. "It's embarrassing. (Starter) Bronson (Arroyo) threw a great game and I should be able to come in and get three outs without letting them take the lead back, especially with a three- run lead."
Brandon McCarthy will try to snap his personal four-start losing streak for the Diamondbacks today.
McCarthy is coming off a 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, charged with five runs through five innings. Only one of those runs was earned and he also yielded seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
The 30-year-old righty is 0-4 with a 6.23 earned run average in five starts on the season and will face the Phillies for the second time in his career. He did not get a decision in the first meeting despite eight scoreless innings.
Getting the call for the Phillies will be 37-year-old A.J. Burnett, who is still in search of his first victory of the season despite having allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five starts.
Burnett did not factor into a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday as he gave up two runs on six hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings. He also helped himself out at the plate with three hits, but sits just 0-1 on the season with a 2.73 ERA.
The right-hander has made six previous starts against the Diamondbacks and is 3-3 with a 4.93 ERA.
Arizona went 3-4 against Philadelphia last season after going 2-4 in 2012.
