Burnett, Phillies blank D-Backs
Apr 28, 2014 - 1:27 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. Burnett hurled eight scoreless innings to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 2-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set.Burnett (1-1) scattered five hits and fanned eight without walking a batter to earn his first win with the Phillies.
"He threw the ball well on the outside of the plate," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "We just couldn't get at him."
Chase Utley was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Phillies, winners in three of their last four games.
Jonathan Papelbon stranded a runner in the ninth to earn his eighth save.
Brandon McCarthy (0-5) was the hard-luck loser. He allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high 12.
"He was good," said Utley. "His velocity was up from what I think we all remember. We were able to get some timely hits, but the real story is how A.J. pitched. He was outstanding."
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ben Revere singled and stole second before scoring on Utley's bloop single to shallow center.
Utley opened the sixth with a double and scored on Chris Owings' throwing error. Marlon Byrd laced a grounder to the hole on the left side. Owings made a diving stab for the ball and fired it to third, but the ball bounced off Utley and out of play, allowing him to score.
Burnett gave up a one-out triple to Owings in fifth inning, but retired the next 10 batters in order. Gerardo Parra finally got to Burnett in the eighth with a two-out double to left-center, but Burnett managed to get Martin Prado to ground out to end the threat.
Papelbon allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but retired the next two hitters to secure the win.
