Carroll stifles Rays in debut as White Sox cruise
Apr 27, 2014 - 11:53 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI and Scott Carroll threw 7 1/3 strong innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 9-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in the third installment of a four-game set.Carroll (1-0) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits in his major league debut.
"He knew what he was doing out there. He threw strikes, let his defense make plays for him. It's special, everyone is happy for him," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.
Marcus Semien collected two hits and an RBI while also scoring a pair of runs and Alexei Ramirez added two hits and an RBI for the White Sox, who have won five of their last eight games to improve to 13-13.
David Price (3-2) was tagged for eight runs -- six earned -- on nine hits over six-plus innings. The southpaw struck out seven and walked one in the setback.
David DeJesus scored on Dayan Viciedo's fielding error to give the Rays a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Yunel Escobar lifted a routine flyball to right, but Viciedo ran past it and the ball rolled past him allowing DeJesus to score with ease.
Chicago, though, exploded for five runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to break the game open.
With runners on first and second in the sixth, Semien reached on a bunt single. Gordon Beckham and Adam Eaton both came around on the play thanks to errors from Price and Wil Myers. Price overthrew first and Myers couldn't handle the ball in right.
Abreu followed with a two-run homer to left field to make it 4-1. Viciedo then doubled before scoring on a throwing error by Escobar to cap the inning.
"We haven't made that many mistakes all year, let alone in one inning. It is an unfortunate day, but it happens to the best of them," said Rays manager Joe Maddon.
With two on in the seventh, Semien doubled to center to score Beckham and knock Price out of the game. Abreu greeted reliever Josh Lueke with a single to center to score Eaton and Semien. Ramirez added a base hit later in the inning to push Abreu across for a 9-1 lead.
Evan Longoria's RBI single in the eighth accounted for the final margin.
