Rays turn to Price against White Sox

Apr 27, 2014 - 12:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price will try to pitch the Tampa Bay Rays to a series lead on Sunday afternoon in the third contest of a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox.

The left-handed Price is coming off a complete-game victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, scattering three runs while striking out a season-high 12. All three runs he allowed came on a pair of fourth-inning homers.

Price improved to 3-1 on the season with a 4.04 earned run average, rebounding from a previous outing in which he yielded six runs over five innings of a loss to the New York Yankees on April 17.

"Velocity was good, strike throwing was good and it seemed like every thing was right," said Rays manager Joe Maddon. "He just made a couple of mistakes. Otherwise, he was pretty much on top of his game."

Price, 28, is 4-4 lifetime versus the White Sox with a 3.11 ERA.

Tampa Bay evened this series with last night's 4-0 victory, with starter Cesar Ramos hurling five-plus innings before Brandon Gomes and Juan Carlos Oviedo finished off the shutout.

Ryan Hanigan notched a two-run double and matched John Flaherty (1999) for the most RBI in April by a Rays catcher with 14.

"I wanna hit. I feel good with my swing, attacking balls in the zone, attacking good pitches," Hanigan said.

James Loney had three hits and an RBI for the Rays, who snapped a three-game losing streak.

John Danks gave up four runs on seven hits and walked four over 5 2/3 innings to absorb the loss for the White Sox, who had won four of six coming in.

"I had moments where I was able to throw any one of the four (pitches) over the plate, but none nearly consistently enough," Danks said.

Scott Carroll will make his major league debut this afternoon for the White Sox. The 29-year-old has been a solid hurler in the minor leagues for some time, having gone 27-38 with a 3.95 ERA in 138 games.

In four starts this season with Triple-A Charlotte, the right-handed Carroll is 3-1 with a 1.57 ERA.

"He's doing pretty good down in Triple-A," Sox manager Robin Ventura said on his club's website. "For us, it's 'give the guy a shot.'"

The Rays won the final five of their seven meetings with the White Sox last season, splitting four encounters in Chicago.
