D'Backs shoot for sweep of Padres
May 4, 2014 - 2:47 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks shoot for their first sweep of the season when they close out a three-game series Sunday against the NL West- rival San Diego Padres at Petco Park. The D'Backs have won three in a row overall, including Saturday's 4-3 victory behind seven shutout innings from Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy picked up his first win (1-5) of the season and struck out six batters with two walks.
"The story of the night was McCarthy's performance," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "Seven great innings for us of shutout ball. He's throwing the ball very well and that set the tone for us."
Addison Reed collected his eighth save in the ninth.
Miguel Montero ended with three hits and also homered, while Chris Owings went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Alfredo Marte ended with two hits and two RBI for Arizona, which posted a 2-0 win in Friday's opener at Petco Park and improved to 6-4 in the last 10 games.
The Diamondbacks, who are slated to visit Milwaukee and Chicago (White Sox) on this current sojourn, hope Wade Miley can complete the sweep of the Padres when he takes the mound Sunday. Miley is winless (0-2) in his past four outings and suffered the loss in Monday's 8-5 setback to Colorado. He allowed a season-high seven runs and 10 hits in six innings.
Miley has a 2-3 record in seven starts with a 5.36 ERA and aims to reverse his fortunes against the Padres. He is just 1-6 with a 5.26 ERA in nine career starts against them.
The Padres are mired in a four-game slide and have lost six of eight games. Ian Kennedy started for San Diego on Saturday and lasted five innings, allowing three runs and 11 hits with seven K's and one walk for the loss.
Jedd Gyorko hit a two-run homer in the ninth and Seth Smith recorded three hits for the Friars.
"It's a long season," said Padres manager Bud Black. "This game is built on peaks and valleys. We're in a little bit of a valley offensively, to say the least."
Black's club has scored five runs in the last four games and will also welcome Kansas City and Miami to Petco Park on this current stay.
Tyson Ross draws the start for San Diego Sunday and he is 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA. Ross last toed the rubber in Monday's 6-4 win at San Francisco and held on for the victory even though he was touched for four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. Ross has given up nine runs in the last two starts.
The right-hander has faced Arizona four times (3 starts) in his career and has a 1-1 record to go along with a solid 1.96 ERA.
San Diego went 12-7 against Arizona last season with an 8-2 mark at Petco.
