Angels eye another win over Yankees

May 6, 2014 - 3:00 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The L.A. Angels of Anaheim took advantage of a shaky bullpen by the New York Yankees to grab the opener of a three-game set and shoot for a series win Tuesday at Angel Stadium.

In Monday's 4-1 win, the Angels scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning without even recording a hit to win for the eighth time in 13 tries. Howie Kendrick, John McDonald and Chris Iannetta all drew bases-loaded walks in the decisive frame.

Yankees reliever Shawn Kelley issued four walks and was reached for three runs to take the loss, while Angels starter Jered Weaver struck out seven and walked one batter through eight innings of one-run ball. Ernesto Frieri fanned two in a the ninth for his third save.

"It's the strongest I felt this year," Weaver said. "My fastball location was the best it's been this year. I showed a little emotion getting out of that eighth-inning jam."

Albert Pujols had two of the Angels' four hits.

The Angels improved to 5-2 on their nine-game homestand.

Taking the mound for Anaheim Tuesday will be left-hander C.J. Wilson, who has won two straight and four of his last five starts. In last Wednesday's 7-1 win over Cleveland, Wilson limited the visiting Indians to two hits and one run with eight strikeouts and one walk. He has at least seven K's in four starts.

Wilson, who has a 3.18 ERA in six outings and will make his fourth start at Angel Stadium, defeated the Yankees on April 25 in a 13-1 pounding in the Bronx. Wilson tossed six innings of one-run ball that day and is 4-3 with a 3.04 ERA in 26 career games (9 starts) against New York.

The Yankees lost for the second straight time and fell to 1-5 in the last six games Monday. Mark Teixeira drove in the lone run for New York and is riding a seven-game hitting streak with four homers and seven RBI in that time.

Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 with a run scored and starting pitcher David Phelps pitched well in the no-decision, as he gave up only a run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected by home plate umpire Laz Diaz for arguing a called strike. Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner struck out moments after Weaver's low-and-away, 1-0 fastball was called a strike. Jeter, who is playing in his final series at Angel Stadium. then grounded into an inning- ending double play.

"Laz wiggled his finger at me as to scold me. I'm not a kid," Girardi said. "There was a lot of inconsistencies tonight."

Girardi's bullpen was inconsistent and entered the game with an AL-best 114 strikeouts. It had one strikeout on Monday and Kelley was also tossed from the game for arguing balls and strikes.

Yankees veteran Alfonso Soriano went 0-for-3 last night and still needs three hits to have 1,000 in each league. He will become the seventh player to achieve the feat.

Yanks center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury finished 0-for-4 against the Angels and is hitless in his last two games after posting eight in the previous three.

New York, which will visit Milwaukee for three games after its California trip, hopes Hiroki Kuroda can pitch himself and the club back into the win column Tuesday. Kuroda is 0-2 in his last three starts and suffered his second straight loss in Thursday's 4-2 defeat versus Seattle.

Kuroda gave up four runs, three of which were earned, and seven hits in six innings with a season-best seven strikeouts and one walk. He is 2-3 in six starts with a 5.14 ERA and has allowed at least three runs in each of his last four trips to the hill.

The right-hander recently lost to the Angels in the aforementioned 13-1 drubbing at Yankee Stadium and yielded eight runs -- six earned -- and 10 hits in a season-low 4 2/3 innings. Kuroda is 3-3 in seven career starts against Anaheim with a 3.11 ERA.

New York took two of three games versus the Angels in the Bronx from April 25-27 after going 4-3 in the 2013 series. The Yankees are 6-3 in the past nine meetings with the Halos.

The Angels have won seven of the last 10 meetings with New York at home and are 27-13 in the previous 40 matchups at Angel Stadium since 2005.
