Mariners try to extend solid play against A's

May 6, 2014 - 3:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Mariners are playing good baseball of late and hope that trend continues when they target another win over the Oakland Athletics Tuesday from O.co Coliseum.

The Mariners resumed their recent success with Monday's 4-2 win over the A's and were led by a solid pitching performance from starter Chris Young and the bullpen. Young gave up a pair of runs in six innings to improve to 2-0 on the season, while five relievers kept the hosts off the board.

"I'm going to keep working, keep trying to get better," Young said. "I feel like as the season progresses my arm strength is going to get better and hopefully the results will continue to be there."

Fernando Rodney struck out a batter in the ninth for his eighth save.

Stefen Romero homered and finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Corey Hart, Brad Miller and Kyle Seager had an RBI apiece for Seattle, which has won three in a row and eight of 10 games.

The Mariners are 5-1 on a nine-game road trip and will play a doubleheader in Oakland on Wednesday.

Seattle's Roenis Elias will make the seventh start of his career Tuesday and is 2-2 with a 3.09 earned run average in the first six. The rookie left-hander was on point in last Thursday's 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in the Bronx and struck out 10 batters over seven strong innings. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- and six hits with two walks.

Elias did not record a decision in his major league debut against Oakland on April 3, when he fired five innings of one-run ball in a 3-2 loss.

The Athletics have lost three of four games since winning three straight and opened a 10-game homestand with last night's loss.

Scott Kazmir suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) and yielded all four runs and eight hits in six innings. Kazmir, Sonny Gray and Jesse Chavez had a combined 10-1 record in the previous 19 starts.

"Probably wasn't his best stuff as we've seen this year," A's manager Bob Melvin said of Kazmir. "You're going to have days like that. He still kept us in the game."

Brandon Moss hit a two-run homer to provide the scoring for Oakland. Josh Donaldson went 1-for-4 and has reached base safely via a hit or walk in each of his last 27 games.

The Athletics, who will also host Washington and Chicago (White Sox) on this stay and lead the AL with a 3.03 earned run average, hope Chavez can pitch them back on track Tuesday. Chavez is 2-0 in six starts with a 1.89 ERA and threw seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball in a 12-1 rout at Texas last Wednesday.

Chavez has benefited from great run support and the A's have scored 12 runs in each of his past two outings and 28 over the previous three. The right-hander squared off with the Mariners in his season debut on April 3 and did not record a decision after he allowed just two runs -- one earned -- in six innings of a 3-2 win.

In nine career games (1 start) against Seattle, Chavez has no record and a 0.53 ERA across 17 innings pitched.

Oakland is 4-3 against the Mariners this season.
