Yankees beat Buehrle, Blue Jays
Jul 26, 2014 - 4:39 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Beltran and Ichiro Suzuki homered off Mark Buehrle, who must be wondering what gives against the New York Yankees.Ditto that for the Toronto Blue Jays in the Bronx.
Beltran and Suzuki's homers in the third inning gave the Yankees the lead for good in a 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays on Friday to open a three-game series between the AL East foes.
The Yankees beat the Blue Jays for the 17th time in a row at home, the longest such streak in the majors in four years.
As for Buehrle? It's been a lot longer since he's won against the Yankees.
He fell to 0-9 in his last 14 starts against them since 2004 and dropped to 1-12 vs. the Yankees in 19 all-time starts -- a strange mark on the durable left-hander's resume.
"Why that is, nobody knows. That (just) happens to some players. This team gives him a tough time," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "I didn't see anything different."
Buehrle (10-7) lasted just three innings -- his shortest outing in more than four years -- and gave up six runs on nine hits and a walk.
Hiroki Kuroda (7-6) got the win despite allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings, all on two homers by Toronto slugger Jose Bautista.
"He just fought all night because I didn't think he had good command of his fastball all night for whatever reason," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
The Yankees stretched their winning streak to four games, pulled one game ahead of Toronto for second place in the division and improved to 7-1 on their 10-game homestand.
The Blue Jays started a 10-game road trip and had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Beltran and Suzuki homered in the third inning to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.
Beltran teed off on a 2-1 changeup, driving it into the right-field seats, and Suzuki homered for the first time since last Aug. 30 against Baltimore on a 1-1 breaking ball he hit over the right-field wall after Brian McCann and Chase Headley singled.
A strong outing by the Yankees bullpen was punctuated by David Robertson in the ninth. He worked around a single to earn his 26th save.
Earlier, Reyes led off the game with a bloop single and Melky Cabrera added a one-out hit before Bautista drove Kuroda's 3-0 sinker over the left-field wall for his first homer of the game and a 3-0 Blue Jays lead.
The Yankees loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning on singles by McCann and Headley and a walk by Suzuki. Brian Roberts singled in McCann and Brett Gardner plated Headley on a sacrifice fly.
Bautista hit his second homer of the game and 20th of the season to left after the Yankees turned a double play in the third, giving Toronto a 4-2 lead.
Game Notes
Buehrle hasn't beaten the Yankees since April 10, 2004, at Yankee Stadium as a member of the White Sox. He is 0-6 in his last nine starts overall (the team is 3-6) since beating Kansas City on June 1. It was the first time he pitched three innings or fewer since throwing three against Cleveland on June 6, 2010 ... Toronto's last road win over the Yankees came Aug. 29, 2012 ... New York's home winning streak over the Blue Jays is the longest in the majors since Cleveland took 18 straight at home against Tampa Bay between Sept. 29, 2005, and July 23, 2010.
