Blue Jays snap 17-game losing streak in the Bronx
Jul 26, 2014 - 11:04 PM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Dan Johnson homered and knocked in four runs as the Toronto Blue Jays got a rare road win over the New York Yankees with a 6-4 decision on Saturday.Melky Cabrera and Steve Tolleson each posted an RBI for the Blue Jays, who snapped a 17-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium.
The improbable streak was the longest road skid since Tampa Bay dropped 18 in a row at Cleveland from 2005-10.
"We're in the thick of a race right now," said Johnson. "You don't want any team to get out in front of you."
Blue Jays starter Drew Hutchison (7-9) aided in stopping the streak, limiting the Yankees to two runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann each knocked two-run homers for New York, which had its four-game winning streak snapped and is now 7-2 on its 10-game homestand heading into Sunday's finale.
"As players you come out here to win the day," said McCann. "You don't think about any of the games you've won. You come out to win the day."
With the game tied in the seventh, Shawn Kelley (1-3) walked Cabrera to begin the inning and allowed a double to Jose Bautista in the next at-bat. Dioner Navarro, who finished 3-for-5, then reached on a fielder's choice to first, where McCann had trouble getting to the bag after smothering the hard grounder. Kelley struck out Tolleson before getting relieved by Matt Thornton. Johnson, the first batter to face Thornton, was jammed with an inside fastball and blooped an infield single that pushed Cabrera across for a 3-2 lead.
Johnson had the opportunity to increase the lead in the ninth and did so by smashing a 3-run homer to right. Beltran trimmed the deficit with his homer in the home half, but it was all for naught. Casey Janssen got McCann to line out to third and Chase Headley to pop-up to shortstop to end it.
Earlier, the game remained scoreless until the fourth, when Beltran walked to begin the inning and scored as McCann stroked his 11th homer of the season.
Toronto, however, matched the Yankees two-run fourth with one of its own in the fifth. Jose Reyes walked with one out, then raced home on Cabrera's double to left. The Blue Jays loaded the bases later in the inning and Tolleson sent a sacrifice fly into center that plated Cabrera to tie the game at 2-2.
