Arencibia helps Rangers top Yankees
Jul 29, 2014 - 6:01 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - J.P. Arencibia hit a go-ahead two-run single as part of a four-run fifth inning and the Texas Rangers defeated the New York Yankees, 4-2, in the opener of a three-game set.Yu Darvish (10-6) struck out eight and allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk over seven innings for Texas, which had dropped eight of its last 10 games coming in.
"He never gave in, he just kept pitching. He didn't have command of his fastball tonight, so he went to his breaking pitches," Rangers manager Ron Washington said of Darvish.
Neftali Feliz fired a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his second save of the season.
Derek Jeter had three hits and moved past Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place on the all-time hits list. Jeter, who shot a single through the hole on the right side to climb past Yastrzemski in the seventh, has 3,420 hits in his illustrious career.
"We've really enjoyed the ride that Derek has been on this year," said Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira. "It seems like every day or every week it seems like he's passing somebody on some list, which is really neat."
Brett Gardner hit a pair of solo home runs to account for New York's runs.
David Phelps (5-5) surrendered four runs on eight hits and a walk over six frames for the Yankees, who have lost three in a row on the heels of a 7-1 stretch.
New York led 2-0 before the Rangers surged ahead following their four-run fifth.
Chris Gimenez began the frame with a single, advanced to second on a Rougned Odor groundout and scored two batters later on Elvis Andrus' base hit through the hole on the left side. Alex Rios' single put runners on the corners and Adrian Beltre ripped a double into the left-field corner to plate Andrus and tie the game.
Jim Adduci worked a walk to load the bases and Arencibia rolled a base hit back up the middle to push across Rios and Beltre and give the Rangers a 4-2 advantage.
New York put the tying runners on second and third with two outs in the seventh, but Brian McCann struck out swinging to end the threat.
Earlier, Gardner cracked his solo shots to right-center in the third and fifth innings, respectively, to stake the Yankees to their 2-0 lead.
Game Notes
Texas was 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while the Yankees finished 0-for-6 ... Jeter is 10 hits away from tying Honus Wagner for sixth all-time on the hits list.
