Scherzer gets nod for Tigers vs. White Sox

Jul 30, 2014 - 2:36 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Scherzer tries to help the Detroit Tigers find their way back to the win column on Wednesday when they continue a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

Detroit fell for a fourth straight time in Tuesday's opener, as Jose Abreu and Adam Dunn clubbed consecutive home runs to highlight a seven-run seventh inning, propelling Chicago to an 11-4 win.

Abreu, who finished with four RBI, hit a two-run homer, his major league- leading 31st of the season. The blast came after Alexei Ramirez stroked a three-run double, which was part of Chicago's 15-hit attack.

"Tonight, whether it was a base hit or a couple of miscues, you take advantage of it," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Jose Quintana (6-7) scattered nine hits and gave up a pair of runs to help the White Sox to their fourth win in five games. The lefty moved to 3-0 over his last eight starts. He hasn't lost since June 13 against Kansas City.

Anibal Sanchez (7-5) surrendered six hits and five runs -- four earned -- over 6 1/3 innings to lose his third straight home start.

Bryan Holaday drove in two runs for the AL Central leaders, who are 4-9 in their last 13 games.

The Tigers still lead the division by five games over Kansas City, while Chicago sits seven games back in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Scherzer will try to stretch that lead on Wednesday when he attempts to win his fifth straight decision. Scherzer beat the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, as he allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings. He also struck out 11 batters and improved to 12-3 to go along with a 3.37 ERA.

"I felt good with everything tonight and had all four pitches going," Scherzer said. "I hadn't been getting the swings and misses I had been searching for with that pitch, so I made a little adjustment with my grip. Tonight I felt like I had a lot more consistency with it and a lot more downward action."

Scherzer has faced the White Sox 21 times and is 11-5 with a 2.40 ERA.

Chicago, meanwhile, will counter with righty Hector Noesi, who is coming off the best start of his season. Noesi won in Minnesota on Thursday, limiting the Twins to a pair of runs and three hits over 7 2/3 innings to up his mark to 5-7 with a 4.99 ERA.

"The strides he's made are impressive from when we got him to what he's doing now, where he's at," Ventura said of Noesi. "To be able to go out and give you this, it's definitely steps in the right direction."

Chicago has split its 10 matchups with the Tigers this season.
