Chen and Orioles slip past Mariners
Aug 2, 2014 - 4:56 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Wei-Yin Chen pitched into the eighth inning as the Baltimore Orioles matched a club record in Friday's 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners at Camden Yards.Chen (12-3) nearly copied his July 24 outing against the Mariners by limiting them to a run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. The lefty, who struck out eight, won his personal-best fifth straight start.
The AL East-leading Orioles played their seventh consecutive one-run game, tying the team mark set June 21-29, 1956. They have gone 5-2 during that stretch.
"They played a better game than we did," said Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon. "It was one of those games where they beat you; you didn't lose."
Seattle plugged trade-deadline acquisitions Austin Jackson and Chris Denorfia into its lineup for the opener of this three-game set, looking to jumpstart the offense, but the attack fizzled and wasted a solid start by Roenis Elias (8-9).
Elias, on his 26th birthday, gave up two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one.
"Both pitchers were really good," said Baltimore's J.J. Hardy. "Chen threw the ball great, Elias threw the ball well and then our bullpen came in and shut them down."
The Mariners have dropped seven of their last 10 games.
Baltimore capitalized on an crucial error to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth.
After Manny Machado led off with a double to right-center field, Adam Jones hit a chopper to Chris Taylor. The shortstop looked to make a play at third, but he bobbled the ball.
Elias struck out Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis on called third strikes, but Hardy hit a single to center to score Machado.
Chen left after issuing his lone walk of the game to Jackson in the eighth. Dustin Ackley reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and took third on a throwing error by catcher Caleb Joseph.
Andrew Miller, a trade-deadline addition to bolster the Baltimore bullpen, then walked Robinson Cano, but ended the threat by getting Kendrys Morales on a grounder to short.
Zach Britton earned his 22nd save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The O's got on the board after Delmon Young opened the third with a double to right. Elias fanned both Joseph and Jonathan Schoop before Nick Markakis reached on a slow roller up the third-base line. Machado then hit an RBI single to center.
Seattle quickly tied the game in the fourth. Cano singled with one out and scored on Morales' double to left.
