Petit's homer lifts Astros over Jays
Aug 2, 2014 - 6:37 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Gregorio Petit's first career home run helped the Houston Astros to a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the second of a four-game set.Robbie Grossman and Jesus Guzman each drove in a run for the Astros, who had lost seven of nine coming into the game.
Collin McHugh pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jose Vera (1-0) recorded the final two outs of the eighth to pick up the win.
"Awesome," Petit said of the homer. "Especially being the first one. Just still living the dream."
Dioner Navarro drove in the lone run of the game for the Blue Jays, who had a six-game winning streak broken.
J.A. Happ pitched seven innings in the start and allowed a run on three hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts. Aaron Loup (3-3) allowed two runs in the eighth to take the loss.
In the eighth, Petit led off with a huge blast over the left-field wall to give the Astros the lead. Jose Altuve followed with a ground-rule double and stole third before Grossman's sacrifice fly gave the Astros an insurance run.
"I threw two pitches, the next thing you know, I give up a home run and a double," said Loup.
Chad Qualls pitched around a one-out single in the ninth for his 12th save of the season.
The Blue Jays struck in the first inning as back-to-back singles from Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista left runners at the corners before Navarro lofted a sac fly for a 1-0 lead.
Happ retired the first 11 batters he faced, but Chris Carter singled with two outs in the fourth and Matt Dominguez followed with a walk. Guzman then singled home Carter to tie the game.
Toronto left men on second and third in the second inning and didn't get a man to second base for the rest of the game.
