Price makes Detroit debut in the Bronx

Aug 5, 2014 - 2:40 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - David Price makes his first start for the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday when they continue a four-game set with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Detroit pulled off the biggest move at last Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline, acquiring the former AL Cy Young Award winner from the Tampa Bay Rays as part of a three-team blockbuster deal with Seattle.

Price leads the majors with 189 strikeouts and now joins a rotation that already includes fellow AL Cy Young winners Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, not to mention 13-game winner Rick Porcello.

"It is different," Price said. "I think the most different part about it is having new teammates. Kind of getting to know everybody on a personal level, and just stuff like that, just want to fit in and not really stand out. I just want to be one of the guys here, and that's what I've been doing. These guys have welcomed me extremely well, and I couldn't ask for anything else from them."

Price last pitched last Tuesday against Milwaukee when he had a six-game winning streak stopped. He allowed four runs (3 earned) and seven hits over seven innings of that one and fell to 11-8 on the year to go along with a 3.11 ERA.

He had pitched to a 1.61 ERA over the course of the winning streak.

The talented left-hander should feel right at home in the Bronx, where he is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in his last five appearances. He's 10-5 lifetime against the Yankees with a 3.66 ERA in 23 career starts.

"I think the biggest thing for me is I'll feel a lot better once I can contribute," Price said. "Once I get out there and make my first start, then I'll really feel like I'm part of the team."

New York, meanwhile, will turn to righty Hiroki Kuroda, who is 7-7 with a 3.98 ERA. Kuroda lost for the first time in five starts on Tuesday in Texas, as the Rangers reached him for three runs - all in the first inning - and nine hits over seven innings.

"Although I gave up three runs in the first, I knew that if I hang in there and be resilient, we would get an opportunity to get a win," Kuroda said through an interpreter. "So I just tried to hang in there."

Kuroda has faced the Tigers three times and is 0-1 against them with a 3.72 ERA.

New York earned a win in the opener of this set on Monday, as Brandon McCarthy had pitch-count trouble but worked into the sixth inning and struck out eight, leading the Yankees to a 2-1 victory.

The Yankees improved to 5-0 with McCarthy (4-0) on the mound since acquiring the right-hander from Arizona last month. He was lifted with two outs in the sixth inning after throwing 116 pitches but gave up just one unearned run, five hits and two walks.

Matt Thornton, Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley and David Robertson finished the game out of the bullpen. Warren was the only one to give up a hit while Robertson struck out two in the ninth for his 30th save.

Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and an RBI for the Yankees, who have won three in a row.

New York kept Tigers righty Scherzer from taking the MLB wins lead. Scherzer (13-4) lost for the first time in eight starts after allowing two runs on nine hits and three walks in seven innings.

"Max kind of struggled in the first part of the game but got sharper as the game went on," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of his starter. "He certainly gave us a good outing."

On the milestone front, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera is one home run away from tying Cecil Fielder on the franchise's all-time list with 245.

Detroit split six matchups with the Yankees last season.
