Dodgers turn to 13-game winner Ryu vs. Braves
Aug 13, 2014 - 3:05 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Lost in all of the Clayton Kershaw hoopla for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been Hyun-Jin Ryu.The left-handed Ryu is silently clinging to a 13-5 record and a 3.21 earned run average and will try to lead the Dodgers to a series win when they play the third test of a four-game series Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field.
Los Angeles has won Ryu's last five starts and the South Korean is 4-0 in that stretch. Ryu tossed seven shutout innings and allowed two hits his last time out in a 7-0 win at the LA Angels. He has lasted six or more innings in each of his previous five outings.
Ryu has been dominant on the road this season as evidenced by a 9-2 mark and 2.61 ERA in 12 outings and has no record in two career starts against Atlanta.
The NL West-leading Dodgers won their third straight game with Tuesday's 4-2 decision over the Braves and were led by Dan Haren, who fired six innings of one-run ball to stay on track and struck out seven batters with one walk.
"You get to this point in the season ... and you just want to win," said Haren, who has won back-to-back starts after losing five in a row.
Kenley Jensen posted his 33rd save and Carl Crawford recorded three hits and a run scored. Darwin Barney and Matt Kemp had an RBI apiece for the Dodgers, who are an NL-best 69-52 and sit six games ahead of San Francisco for the NL West lead. The Dodgers have won 13 of the past 18 games and are 39-25 on the road.
Atlanta has lost 11 of its last 13 games to fall five games behind Washington for the NL East lead.
Mike Minor was dealt the loss for the Braves last night and allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings. B.J. Upton homered and Justin Upton drove in a run for Atlanta, which is 2-3 on a 10-game homestand.
"We're working hard ... but we're not getting many results," Braves third baseman Chris Johnson said. "We just can't figure it out right now."
The Braves are still without shortstop Andrelton Simmons because of an ankle issue and could return soon, according to manager Fredi Gonzalez.
"He's getting close," Gonzalez said.
Simmons said he is "ready to go" and is batting .249 with five homers and 36 RBI this season. He hasn't played since last Tuesday at Seattle.
Ervin Santana will try to pitch the Braves back on track Wednesday and he has an 11-6 mark with a 3.69 ERA this season. Santana is 4-0 in his last five starts and 6-1 in his past seven decisions. He survived a 7-6 win over Washington on Friday and allowed four runs in six innings.
Santana has pitched well at home this season, going 8-2 in 11 starts, and is 4-4 with a 3.27 ERA in eight career starts against the Dodgers. In 16 starts at night, the right-hander is 8-4.
Los Angeles swept a three-game series with the Braves in late July and has won seven of the last nine meetings between the two ballclubs.
